Best Execution

Best execution is the obligation on a broker or fund to take all reasonable steps to obtain the most favourable terms for a client's order, considering price, cost, speed, likelihood of execution and settlement.

In India, SEBI's intermediary regulations and exchange rules require brokers to act in the client's interest and not disadvantage them, particularly when offering Smart Order Routing across NSE and BSE. Best execution is not simply the best headline price; it balances price improvement against the certainty and cost of getting filled.

For institutional mandates, best execution is evidenced through Transaction Cost Analysis and documented routing policies. It underpins the design of execution algos, which must be able to demonstrate that their order-handling logic seeks favourable outcomes rather than benefiting the broker.
