Definition
e-RUPI
e-RUPI is a prepaid, purpose-specific digital voucher delivered via SMS or QR that can be redeemed only for a designated service, without needing a card, app or bank account.
e-RUPI, developed by NPCI with the government, is a one-time, person- and purpose-specific voucher. A sponsor (government or company) issues it for a fixed amount tied to a particular use — say a vaccination, a scholarship or a fertiliser subsidy — and the beneficiary redeems it at the designated provider.
Because it is contactless and does not require the recipient to have a bank account or smartphone app, it improves leak-proof delivery of welfare and corporate benefits, ensuring funds are spent only on the intended service.
It is distinct from a general wallet: an e-RUPI voucher cannot be transferred or used for arbitrary spending, which is its core control feature.
