Percentage of Volume (POV)

Percentage of Volume, also called participation rate, is an execution algorithm that keeps the order's trading volume at a fixed percentage of the market's total volume until the order is filled.

A POV algo set at, say, 10% will dynamically buy or sell so that it accounts for roughly one-tenth of every share traded in that stock. Unlike TWAP or a schedule-based VWAP, POV adapts in real time, trading faster when the market is active and slower when it is quiet, which limits market impact.

Indian desks favour POV for stocks where forecasting the volume profile is unreliable, since it reacts to actual liquidity rather than a prediction. The trade-off is uncertain completion time: in a quiet session, a POV order may not finish, requiring the trader to raise the participation rate or switch to a more aggressive algo.
