Definition
UPI Lite
UPI Lite is an on-device wallet within UPI apps for low-value payments that works without entering a UPI PIN and, for small amounts, even offline.
UPI Lite lets you load a small balance from your bank account into an on-phone wallet and then make quick low-value payments without a PIN, reducing friction for everyday small transactions like tea, auto fares or parking.
Because Lite payments are settled from the pre-loaded balance and not routed through the core banking system for each tap, they ease load on bank servers and can work in low-connectivity situations. NPCI sets per-transaction and wallet balance caps to keep risk low.
It is positioned for small-ticket spends where speed matters more than the audit trail of a full UPI transaction, and balances can be topped up again from your linked account.
