IndiGo's Inaugural Flights
IndiGo, India’s largest airline, launched its first flights from NIA on June 15. The inaugural flight arrived from Lucknow, while the first departure headed to Bengaluru. This marks a strategic move for the airline, which now operates from all three airports in the NCR: Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), Hindon Airport, and NIA.
Operational Details and Capacity
The airport is initially focused on domestic operations but plans to commence international flights in coming months. Its first phase is designed to handle 12 million passengers annually, with a long-term expansion plan that could increase capacity to more than 70 million a year. Zurich Airport International AG has guided for around 4 million passengers in 2026.
Economic and Logistic Impacts
The launch of NIA is expected to boost regional connectivity, tourism, trade, and investment across northern India. The airport's cargo terminal will have an initial handling capacity of 200,000 metric tonnes annually, with plans to scale up to 1.5 million tonnes.
Passenger Tariffs
The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) has finalised the initial passenger tariffs for NIA. For FY27, departing domestic passengers will pay a User Development Fee (UDF) of Rs 490, while international departures will attract a UDF of Rs 980. Arriving passengers will pay Rs 210 on domestic flights and Rs 420 on international services.
